Linear B to Greek: pu-ro to ]pu-ti[

· Linear B Lexicon

LinB words

pu-ro | ]pu-ti[

Greek words

πυρός | πυτι

pu-ro | πυρό(ς) (puros) | wheat, triticum vulgare
Pylos “wheat tablets”
Due to the frequency of this reference on Pylian tablets, scholars assume an alternation of /l/ for /r/ and surmise Πύλος (Pulos) “Pylos”. However, pu-ro is often accompanied by ko-wo, which is found in χόω (khowo) “to bury”, a reference to sowing.

]pu-ti[ | πυτι (puti) | that which is poured
KHv Z 4, 10, 18 (Scribes unknown)
Cf.  po-si > πόσις “a beverage, a drink” and πότις (potis) “a drinker”.  Cf., also, potable “drinkable”.
